Embarking on a program of executive coaching can be an intimidating process. First there is choosing the right coach (there are so many out there) for you, your needs and your style. Then you need to decide how much of your hard-earned money you are willing to invest. But probably even more confronting for some is the process of coaching itself. How much of my personal thoughts will I be asked to divulge? Is this going to reveal something embarrassing about my personality? How much work will there be in it for me and will I be able to make time for it? What if I can't/don't want to change? What even is coaching anyway?
Let's break down the process of coaching atMindCraft Leadership to demystify and debunk some myths:
Coaching IS engaging the services of another to help you work through your own thoughts to achieve a goal or series of goals that you set for yourself. It can be life-changing and can set you on a course that is ultimately more fulfilling.
Coaching IS NOTtelling you what to do. That is mentoring.
In coaching we believe in the potential of each and every human. We help our clients remove the obstacles that get in the way of them achieving their hopes and dreams.
Every potential client is offered a no-obligation introductory session, free of charge, where they can assess the fit of the coach for their needs and style, and some basic goal-setting can be worked on. At this stage a program will be recommended and a firm quote provided.
A program can last anything from just a couple of sessions to an ongoing relationship that is leveraged through-out ones career. Commonly it starts with 6 sessions to implement an important goal or two. These are spaced out according to specific needs and calendars.
In coaching, the client is in control of what they bring to the table. A good coach will challenge your thinking and get you to try on new perspectives, often revealing aspects of your personality that are blind spots. How much of this you share is completely up to you. Anything shared in a session is confidential. Our reputation is at stake and the internationally recognised code of ethics subscribed to via our accreditation has strict rules around confidentiality and ethics. For more information about the International Coach Federation code of ethics click here.
Coaching requires commitment, both in time, as well as effort to truly work on yourself. Think carefully about whether you are ready and how important your goal is to you. The introductory session can help you work through that before any commitments are made.
Coaching is both highly challenging and highly rewarding. It helps you achieve outcomes you never thought possible that will benefit throughout your lifetime, impacting on your professional life, but also your personal life. If you are ready to start making a real difference, contact us to arrange your introductory session and let's go!
